We have three colonies of bees, all named after geographical peninsulars. Our first hive, established from a wild swarm, is called Gower. It is named for my birthplace and the place I call Home with a capital H. Our second hive, also created from a wild swarm which graced our land the following year, is called Wilson’s, after the promontory wilderness we enjoyed visiting while living in Melbourne, Australia. The third hive – a child colony from a swarm out of Gower, was given the name Crimea, after the peninsular in Ukraine annexed by Russia in 2014. Names are powerful… As we step into winter and the ninth month of war in Ukraine, Crimea is struggling. She might not make it through the cold season.
